Watchlist: The Rainbow Family
Whether it’s queer parents, chosen family, or a close-knit group of friends, these bonds define what family means. Watching films that showcase these connections is important because they provide representation, challenge outdated norms, and broaden our understanding of love and belonging. Rainbow families, in all their forms, show that family is not just about biology but about deep, unconditional care. Seeing these stories on screen is both powerful and necessary, offering validation to those who rarely see their experiences reflected and reminding us all that family is, above all, about who stands by you. This rich variety is also reflected in the Roze Filmdagen program.
Joseph and Sonya are close friends who are raising their young son Pino together. When Sonya checks herself into a clinic to recover from depression, Joseph is forced to juggle parenting, his artistic ambitions, romantic possibilities while struggling to move on from the breakup with his ex-boyfriend. The film makes us realize that humor can be found everywhere, even in the saddest situations.

In the gray port town of Dieppe in northern France, one day fisherman Erwan walks into cabaret ‘The Bearded Mermaid’, a brand new world of glitter and show. He embraces it with both arms, and with him we enter the dressing rooms, and the joys and sorrows of the drag artists.
While nowadays for many people 'drag’ is defined by the perfection of RuPaul, this charming film gives a warm portrait of the messy, but self-chosen family of this - really existing! - small town cabaret.

Ballroom culture is associated with playful gender expression, but is also deeply connected to race and class. For many young, underprivileged folks, the Houses and balls are a safe space - they are a home, a hospital and a church.
